Study Abroad Program

Advantages/Features of the Program

  • Hong Kong University Study Abroad Program is an arrangement for non-local graduates to stay in Hong Kong/return to Hong Kong for employment.

  • An immigration policy formulated by the Hong Kong government to encourage overseas students to study in Hong Kong and intend to stay in Hong Kong to work and live.

  • Applicants obtain a study visa by enrolling in a full-time university in Hong Kong. Their spouse and children under the age of 18 can apply for temporary resident status in Hong Kong. After graduation, if they are employed by Hong Kong companies within the next 7 years, the whole family can also obtain a Hong Kong identity card and a SAR passport.

  • One person goes to school, the whole family benefits.

  • The whole family enjoys free education and medical benefits.

  • You can get a Hong Kong master's degree in as fast as one year, and your academic qualifications are recognized both internationally and domestically.

Eligibility criteria

Visa/entry permit applications for studying in Hong Kong may be considered if the following requirements are met:
  • Has been admitted by a private school registered under the Education Ordinance (Cap. 279) or the Post-Secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap. 320). Applications to study in public or subsidized schools (except English Schools Foundation schools and Direct Subsidy Scheme schools) other than post-secondary institutions will not be approved;

  • Studying full-time locally-accredited post-secondary courses (including short-term courses) or part-time locally-accredited local postgraduate courses;

  • Studying a full-time locally-accredited local sub-degree exchange programme of not more than six months or a full-time locally-accredited local or non-local exchange programme at undergraduate level or above of not more than one year; or enrolled in a full-time programme on the register of non-local higher education or professional courses established under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance (Cap. 493);

    • - Aged 5 years and 8 months to 11 years for primary school admission; or Aged under 20 years for secondary school admission;

    • - The applicant holds a letter of acceptance from a school proving that he/she has been admitted to a particular course; and

    • - The applicant can afford his/her tuition, living and accommodation expenses in Hong Kong without relying on work or public funds.

  • *This entry arrangement does not apply to: Chinese residents in the Mainland and Taiwan; former Chinese residents in the Mainland who settled in the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) after January 14, 1979; and nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, Nepal and Vietnam
